Happy International Women’s Day!!!!!
Happy International Women’s Day to all of my wonderful dolls out there!!!!!!!!!!!!!! To be a woman is an amazing thing. To raise a daughter is a powerful thing. And to be a Black woman is magical. To all my dolls alI around the world know that you are special and can do everything that you dream of. This morning I sang to P that she could be anything she wanted to be. That she was special, beautiful, intelligent, and wonderfully made. She could be a lawyer, a doctor, a geneticist, an engineer, an entrepreneur, an accountant, an actress, a singer, a neurosurgeon, a professor, a coder, a designer, and the President. And just like the words to Beyonce’s controversial hit, all she has to do is dream it, work hard, and grind til she owns it. And most importantly, twirl on those haters who say otherwise.
Come to my dinner party, I promise to be a great host!!!
Anywho, the other day, I was having a random gchat convo with my doll S. We posed this question to each other: If you could have a dinner party and only invite 5 people, who would it be? Well in honor of International Women’s Day, let me share with you who I would pick for a dinner party today. And yes, they all have something to do with fashion and are all black girl magic.
#1 Kahlana Barfield Brown, InStyle Editor. Follow her on IG @ KahlanaBarfield. I stumbled across an interview with her on XO Necole and loved this quote: “A lot of times young girls are impatient and they want it to happen so quickly. They try it and if it’s not happening fast enough they move on to something else. But that something else that they move on to isn’t necessarily their passion. They couldn’t be patient anymore and obviously, we all need money and you want something stable, but I always say ride it out because when you’re doing something that you actually love, you’re going to enjoy going to work every day.” For more read here! I love her go-getter spirit, determination to excel at her passion, and her style. This Howard alumni started out as an intern at InStyle and is now an Editor-At-Large there; she proves that hard work really does pay off. #motivation #inspiration P.S. Check out her wedding on The Coveteur.
#2 Shiona Turini, Stylist, Creative Consultant, and Freelance Editor. Follow her on IG @ Shionat. P.S. This is the talented person behind all of Beyonce’s Formation looks. Say what!!!!!!!!!!! She was was the Accessories Editor at W Magazine and then the Accessories Director at Teen Vogue. Next up, she worked with Carine Roitfeld on her CR Fashion Book as the Market and Beauty Director. Then became the Fashion Market Director at Cosmo. Do I need to go on? This doll is talented and accomplished. Serving on the HBCU Alumni Panel at the White House, Turini stunned in a 3.1 Phillip Lim suit. For more on her White House style, check out Who What Wear.

And she has worked with ever so stylish Solange at Saint Heron as the Art and Culture Editor. Oh, and did I forget to mention that she was the winner of her department’s thesis award at Columbia where she studied African American Studies. YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love it. #4 Karleen Roy, Founder of The Vanity Group. Follow her on IG @ VanityGroupNYC. So to be honest, I didn’t know who she was at first, but I’m glad I do now. One day, I stumbled upon Karleen’s IG page when I saw her posted up with my Kahlana on IG. Talk about a haute pic!!!! I just had to learn more about her. And when I saw The Vanity Group’s tagline where being self-centered is a good thing, I fell even more in like with her. LOL! P.S. #5 Danielle Prescod, Accessories Editor at InStyle Magazine. Follow her on IG @ DanielePrescod. So…….. Fan girl moment here. Who wouldn’t love anyone whose job it is to be an expert on accessories? Accessories, the final touch to the hautest outfit. And how I imagined, the makings of her closet are everything. From furs to sneakers, she says she’s weirdly attracted to things that are simultaneously preppy and street (The Coveteur). YES!!!!!!! That just speaks to my glamoroursly preppy soul. Prior to InStyle, Prescod was the Fashion Editor at Elle. Holy Smokes! According to The Fashion of Culture, she was “only one of the few (very few) women of color to hold such a position within the industry.” P.S. Check out her website, Sally and Danielle. Oh, and I’m kind of obsessed with her tweets.
